From 2014 to 2019, I was a part of a small team developing internal combustion rotary engines. Design on Xmini was started shortly after my start at LPI and I have worked on several iterations of the design. While mostly focused on design and structural/thermal analysis, I have participated in several aspects of the development—from brainstorming and research to assembly and testing.

Engineered novel dynamic seals to greatly reduce leakage past rotor
Developed a script to calculate inertial forces and moments on a per crank angle basis to aid in balance
Optimized rotor rib geometry to improve strength, susceptibly to buckling, and minimize inertia
Worked with team to package engine into a small genset
Detailed bearing life and friction calculations
Improved gear design: including material, heat treatment, geometric, and manufacturing considerations
Fabricated a test fixture to measure gear backlash to track engine wear in a repeatable way
